Some clients do not wish to do user research, but do with to have their UX evaluated. In lieu of user research, I conduct Usability Audits that combine Google Analytics review and heuristic evaluation. Using analytics, I identify potential issues to investigate and key interactions to evaluate. Then, I conduct heuristic evaluations of key pages and workflows to identify specific issues and provide recommendations.
Expert Review
Without going into too much detail about our client, I found noticeable differences in the way that mobile and tablet users interacted with the site as opposed to desktop users. Armed with this knowledge, I conducted heuristic reviews of the pages in question and found that the mobile design had several issues including:
- Vague labels for menus collapsed on mobile
- Difficult to locate links for key action
- Difficult touch targets throughout the site
My review and subsequent changes led to changes that increased app downloads, a key performance indicator for our client, and will lead to future navigation changes and redesign efforts.
