Lunch and Learn: Expert Reviews

Lately at work, I’ve had a few opportunities to conduct expert reviews for clients. While I’d prefer to conduct research with real users, expert reviews are certainly helpful. In my workplace, that’s usually because our budget or timeline dictates that we can’t do user research.

Following a string of requests for expert reviews, I thought it was time to share my process with the rest of the company so I set a date to do a lunch and learn. I prepared most of the presentation weeks early, but decided to add an interactive component at the last minute to make things a little more fun.

I’ll post the slides below, but in summary, here’s what I covered:

  • What an expert review is
  • Why you would do an expert review
  • Different types of expert reviews
    • Heuristic Evaluation
    • Cognitive Walkthrough
    • PURE Method
  • Activity: Group evaluation using the PURE Method.

In full disclosure, the PURE method isn’t something that I typically do but I took this opportunity to educate myself on it. It’s also what I used for our group activity since the grading criteria is simpler for non-experts to grasp than Heuristic Evaluation or Cognitive Walkthrough. Slides 23 and 24 in my slide deck are the real results we came up with during our session.
